Summer Heat in Veracruz
The humidity of Veracruz clung to the skin, making the air thick and heavy. In our middle-class home, the heat was an ever-present companion, driving us to spend our afternoons in the simplest of clothes. I was three years older than my brother, and it was my job to keep him entertained while our mother focused on her accounting work in the other room.
It started as a game, a curiosity born from the innocent exploration of youth. We would watch cartoons, the flickering screen casting shadows across the living room. During the commercials, I would tickle him—his ribs, his stomach, the soles of his feet. He would writhe with laughter, his body twisting against mine.
In those moments of chaotic joy, my hands would wander, brushing against him. I noticed how his body reacted, and soon, I felt a mirroring sensation within myself. The boundaries of sibling affection blurred into something deeper and more electric. We shared a secret language of touch, a private world where the heat of the city matched the fire growing between us, hidden away from the world behind closed doors.
