A Christmas Gift of Trust

The holiday season in the city was usually a whirlwind of noise, but for Gonza and me, this particular Christmas felt heavy. Gonza had been struggling; his mother’s battle with alcoholism had fractured his world. When she entered rehab in December, he was left adrift. My parents, ever welcoming, let him stay with us, but the trauma followed him into our home.

During the family party, Gonza remained a ghost, drifting through the laughter with a hollow look in his eyes. Once the house cleared and my parents headed downtown, the silence between us became suffocating. In a burst of grief, Gonza lashed out, questioning why I had a stable family while he felt utterly alone. He retreated to the guest room, leaving me in a state of shock.

I followed him, not with anger, but with a quiet resolve. I found him curled on the bed, the facade of strength finally shattered. I sat beside him, offering a silent presence until he finally spoke, his voice cracking as he confessed his fear of being unlovable. I held him close, whispering that he was not alone and that we would face the healing process together.

As the snow began to fall outside, the tension broke. In the warmth of the room, we shared a kiss that tasted of salt and hope. It wasn’t a perfect holiday, but as we clung to one another, we found a new kind of peace—a trust built from the ruins of pain.
