The Chemistry of Literature
Julian had been the focal point of my universe since the first day of senior year. He was an effortless blend of athletic grace and quiet intensity, with piercing green eyes and broad shoulders that seemed to command the air around him. For months, I felt his gaze lingering on me from two desks back, a heavy, electric tension that left me breathless.
The shift happened during our Literature class when we were paired for a project. When Julian agreed to come over to my house, my heart hammered against my ribs. My parents were away, leaving the house echoing with a silence that only amplified the sound of our breathing.
After hours of studying, the atmosphere shifted. We were lounging on the sofa, ostensibly watching videos, but the air between us grew thick. Julian leaned in, his scent of cedar and rain enveloping me. When his lips finally met mine, the world vanished, leaving only the heat of his touch and the sudden, desperate realization that we had both been waiting for this moment for far too long.
