The Champagne Catalyst

I had always viewed Marina with a mixture of distant admiration and cautious avoidance. She was undeniably stunning—tall, with a lithe frame and curves that commanded attention—but her personality was a fortress of cold indifference. As my brother-in-law’s wife, she was a permanent fixture in our social circle, yet we rarely spoke beyond the necessary pleasantries. That changed on a humid Monday afternoon, shortly after her husband, Diego, departed for a long-term assignment in Chile.

The day had begun with a boisterous farewell lunch, where the wine flowed as freely as the congratulations. Marina had been particularly enthusiastic, her laughter growing louder and her gaze more luminous with every glass. By the time we returned home, she seemed transformed, the usual ice in her veins replaced by a shimmering, alcohol-induced warmth.

Barely ten minutes after I had settled into my home office, my phone buzzed. It was Marina, her voice sounding breathless and frantic, claiming a plumbing disaster had flooded her kitchen. I sighed, thinking it a nuisance, but I climbed the two flights of stairs to her apartment regardless. When she opened the door, she was still in her lunch attire: a tight blouse with a daring neckline and a skirt that flirted with her knees. The coldness was gone; in its place was a suggestive, playful energy.

The “flood” turned out to be a simple disconnected drain hose. As I knelt on the floor to fix the leak, Marina’s behavior became increasingly erratic and flirtatious. She didn’t just thank me; she hugged me, her scent a heady mix of expensive perfume and champagne. To celebrate the repair, she produced a bottle of chilled champagne and two glasses, insisting we toast to my handiness.

The alcohol acted as a catalyst, stripping away the social inhibitions that had kept us apart for years. As I leaned back under the sink to finalize the connection, I emerged to find Marina perched on the counter. Her legs were draped wide open, her feet resting on the edge of the granite, presenting me with the vivid violet lace of her panties. The invitation was silent but deafening.

I forgot the faucet. My hand reached for that sliver of violet lace, and the friction of the fabric against her warmth sparked an immediate fire. We didn’t make it back to the kitchen counter; we tumbled into her matrimonial bed in a blur of desperate hunger. The sex was primal and urgent, a collision of long-suppressed attraction and liquid courage. We lost ourselves in each other twice over the next hour, the world outside the bedroom door ceasing to exist.

In the weeks that followed, I realized that the champagne had been the key. Without the influence of the glass, Marina returned to her reserved self, requiring far more persuasion to meet me in secret. However, whenever the holidays rolled around and the drinks began to flow, the ice would melt. Every time she drank, she became the woman from that first afternoon—bold, insatiable, and completely mine.
