The Secret Behind the Mask
Back in 2005, the halls of our high school in Parral, Chihuahua, were dominated by Javier. He was the quintessential alpha—handsome, athletic, and perceived as the most heterosexual man in the building. To everyone else, he was the untouchable king of the campus, but to me, he was a magnetic mystery.
Everything changed during a game of hide-and-seek while on cleaning duty. I had slipped into a cramped restroom stall in the second building. Just as I was about to close the door, Javier appeared, breathless and urgent. “Wait, me too!” he whispered, sliding into the tiny space beside me.
The air became thick with sudden tension. We were pressed chest-to-chest, the heat of our bodies radiating through our clothes. In the silence, my hand accidentally brushed against him, and I froze. Instead of pulling away, Javier leaned in, his breath warm against my ear.
“I’ve wanted to be this close to you for months,” he confessed, his voice a low tremble. The mask of the school heartthrob shattered, revealing a vulnerability that mirrored my own. In that suffocatingly small space, the world outside ceased to exist, leaving only the frantic beat of two hearts finally finding their rhythm.
