Summer Heat on the Highway
The air conditioning in the SUV struggled against the oppressive July heat as we cruised toward the coast. I was traveling with my older brother, his wife, and my cousin, Elena. Elena was twenty-one, a college student with a playful spirit and a laugh that always seemed to linger in the air. Because of the cramped seating, we had folded the back seats into a makeshift bed for the long haul.
An unspoken electricity had always existed between Elena and me—a series of lingering glances and accidental touches. As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of bruised purple and gold, the rest of the car drifted into a deep sleep.
In the sudden silence, Elena shifted closer to me. The scent of vanilla and warm skin filled the small space. Her hand brushed against mine, and this time, she didn’t pull away. Our eyes met in the dim light, and the tension that had been simmering for years finally boiled over. We shared a breathless, stolen kiss, the thrill of the risk adding to the fire between us.
